Tobacco Review: Distinguished Gentleman

E. Hoffman Company: Distinguished Gentleman — A Fragrant Pipe Tobacco

Packaging
While Distinguished Gentleman comes in a standard American tobacco tin, the labeling is quite nice and feels antiquated. Beside the old school design and fonts, the tin comes with an antique tax seal on either side of the tin. It’s a very nice touch and adds another dimension to the overall charm of the tin.

On either side of the tin, there are different descriptions. One one side: “An elegant & captivating pipe tobacco comprised of select choice leaf, gently fragrant with an intoxicating Aroma.” On the other side: “The taste and aroma preferred by men of distinction.”

Contents
There’s a bit of discrepancy about its contents. Smokingpipes.com states it contains burley, latakia, orientals, and virginia. TobaccoReviews.com and the EHoffmanCo.com (manufacture) website says it has cavendish instead of orientals. No one really says there’s a topping but I definitely detect an alcohol (rum) topping.

It’s a course, ribbon cut tobacco made up of black, brown, and tan tobaccos.

Moisture content out of the tin is just about perfect; no drying time nor hydration needed.

Tin Note
Upon opening the tin, one gets a big whiff of rum. Besides the rum, the only thing I could make out was the smokey, incensey Latakia. I couldn’t really make out any of the other tobaccos because the rum was so predominant. If you enjoy rum, you’d like it. If not, well, this might be a big turn off.

Smoking
First light and true light, the alcohol burns off. At first, I thought it was perique (a spicy, peppery tobacco) because of the tingly sensation in my mouth and nose (probably from the burleys). But that goes away fairly quickly. What’s left is a nice, well-rounded blend. All of the components come through in different moments, like an orchestra. Sometimes you get a little toasted nuttiness from the burleys. Then there’s the grassy sweetness from the virginias. And every once in a while, you’ll get just a waft of incense — the latakia making itself known. The cavendish provides a nice, natural tobacco component keeping everything together. There’s a very slight taste of rum throughout the smoke.

There nicotine hit is very mild. So is the tongue bite. All in all, it’s a very mild blend that could be an all day smoke.
