The Prayer: Loving God, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus the Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.                                     The Lessons: Jeremiah 29:1 [2-3], 4-7 (CEB; adapted): [1] 1 The prophet Jeremiah sent a letter from Jerusalem to the few surviving elders among the exiles, to the priests and the prophets, and to all the people Nebuchadnezzar had taken to Babylon from Jerusalem. [ 2 The letter was sent after King Jeconiah, the queen mother, the court officials, the government leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen and smiths had left Jerusalem. 3 It was delivered to Babylon by Elasah, Shaphan’s son, and Gemariah, Hilkiah’s son — two men dispatched to Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar by King Zed...

Pipe Spotlight: Peterson’s System Standard 314

The next pipe I want to spotlight in this series is my Peterson’s System Standard 314 . I’ve had this pipe for so long I don’t remember when I got it! I’m fairly sure I purchased it from Cup O’ Joes as that was my primary source for online pipes and tobaccos when I first started smoking a pipe. According to Mark Irwin over at Peterson Pipe Notes , the 314 was one of the original Patent shapes. The 314 is described as a “medium bent billiard,” and while I get the bent billiard part, the “medium” is a little bit of a stretch, to me anyway. Looking at the numbers from Peterson of Dublin , I compared 3 of the 6 pipes listed on Mark’s post, A Guide to System Shapes, 1896 – 2019, Part 1 (The 300 Shape Group) — 307 , 312 , 314 . Their sizes are as follows: 307 312 314 Length 144mm 152mm 124mm Height 51mm 50mm 45mm Outside Diameter 40mm 36mm 36mm Chamber Diameter 20mm 19mm 18mm Chamber Depth 41mm 40mm 37mm Weight 63g...

Proper 22 (27) (Year C)

The Prayer: All-Loving God, you’re always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we’re not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus the Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.                                     The Lessons: Lamentations 1.1-6 (CEB; adapted): [1] 1 Oh, no! She sits alone, the city that was once full of people. Once great among nations, she’s become like a widow. Once a queen over provinces, she’s become a slave. 2 She weeps bitterly in the night, her tears on her cheek. None of her lovers comfort her. All her friends lied to her; they’ve become her ene...
