The End of the World as We Know It!

If you don't know what I'm referring to, let me assure you that I have not joined the follies of Dispensationalism. No, I'm referring to something a lot different. You can now run Windows natively on your (Intel based) Mac. That's right. You read that correctly. Apple has released a beta app called 'Boot Camp' that will let you install WindowsXP on your Apple computer and then dual boot between Mac or Windows. The interesting thing about this is that, while this is beta software now, it will be a part of Apple's next OS, Leopard.

Now, there is no reason for panic. At least, I don't think so. Right now, Apple is growing by at least 30% which is roughly three times faster than any other computer company out there. And this little feature should increase that to three hundred times! Imagine, all the people that we know who still are using Windows but we keep pestering them to get a Mac. Now, they will not have an excuse. They can buy the Mac and install Windows on it -- if they need to. Let's do it this way instead. Talk them into getting the Mac but don't install Windows yet. Use that as a 'last ditch effort' kind of thing. If they can't get the hang of Mac OS X (which, we all know that they will), then install Windows. But, and this is up to us MacHeads here, we will need to make sure they use Mac OS X. They need to see its beauty. They need to experience its simplicity. And after a while, they will realize that they don't need no stinkin' Windows! The will be comfortable MacHeads like the rest of us.

And as an aside -- I think this fulfills some ancient prophecy in Daniel or Ezekiel somewhere. :)

This is very close to what I thought when you sent me the link to this announcement yesterday. I was thinking how smart it was of Mac to make it POSSIBLE to run Windows, but not to sell or support it. Even if people DO install Windows from the get-go, they are going to get curious and try the Mac OS at some point.

It's amazing. It's as if Apple has suddenly waked up and realized they're smarter than IBM/Microsoft, and that marketing is little more than applied intelligence.

Yeah, but you forgot one thing-----MONEY!
We can't just go out and buy a MAC, or change our offices to MACs without capital!

Yeah, Pinball, I hope that you are right here. I am thinking similar thoughts. It seems that may be setting itself up as the 'next big thing' regarding computers. To top this off, Microsoft announced earlier in the week (or was it last month now?) that it will postpone Vista until early 2007! And they might have to rewrite over half the code!

I'm not sure when Apple will be releasing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, but I'm thinking Steve Jobs will be pushing for a release date prior to that of Microsoft Vista.

Concerning money: Yeah Mom, I know what you're saying here. Money is a big issue -- at the beginning. The overall cost of owning a Mac to that of Windows, however, is less. Furthermore, the idea to 'upgrade' the OS won't have to take hardware into consideration. Right now, the latest Apple OS (Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger) can run on five year old hardware. That is something that Windows can't do. In fact, they will tell you that they won't support it. When Vista is released, the current systems in your office won't be able to run it all that well. Then, after a little while, Microsoft won't support XP either. They 'force' people to upgrade by not supporting the previous OS.

So, again, you're right about the money. It does cost more up front to buy an Apple computer. But the benefits -- easy of use, intelligent design of the functions of software and hardware, esthetics, (still) no viruses or spyware, etc. -- are longer lived.

It's been a while since I did a technological (read: geek) blog, so I thought I would update you on what's going on. The OS Problem

I recently purchased a new laptop.  It's a Gateway M-6843 .  It's wonderful!  The very first thing I did, of course, was install Ubuntu 8.04.1 .  I plugged in the laptop and booted from the Ubuntu CD and clicked the install icon.  After about a week, I saw this blog detailing how this person got a refund from HP because he didn't want to use Windows Vista.  So, I started the process with Gateway.  It's been about a week and it's going to be a long process.  Customer Support at Gateway gave me the run-around so I am in the process of writing a letter to the Corporate Office. The reason for all of this is because of the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) from Microsoft.  According to the EULA, if I choose not to use Vista, I should contact the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM, in my case this would be Gateway) for a refund or credit.  But this begs the question: Why don't people get this option before buying the system?  That is, instead of having the cust...

From time to time, I hear a lot about the early church’s understanding of the “end of the world” or their belief that the “Second Coming of Jesus” would take place within their generation. And it’s usually not in a very good light. “They were obviously mistaken,” is often the remark I hear most. I know it’s hard to imagine but what if we’re mistaken? What if we’ve misunderstood what they meant? I’m hoping that this series on some of the major statements from the New Testament about the “end of the world” will show that they weren’t mistaken in their understanding of the “signs of the times.” Before we begin, however, let’s look at some terms that will have to be used.
